American Purple Gallinule – frango-d’agua-azul – Porphyrio martinica. Late news, this bird was found and photographed by Gilberto Rodrigues (Betinho) this constitutes the first record for Intervales.

11/03/2011 Perequê-Açu, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Willet – maçarico-de-asa-branca – Tringa semipalmata. Found and photographed feeding along the mud at low tide along the rivermouth by Rick and Elis Simpson. This constitutes the first documented record for Ubatuba.

17/02/2011 PESM Intervales, Ribeirão Grande, São Paulo. Brown-backed Parrotlet – apium-de-costas-pretas – Touit melanonotus.A group of birds was heard by Robson Silva e Silva. This species is becoming better know as a result of the birds at Praia Vermelha in Ubatuba, and they are beginning to surface in other localities as observers learn more about them. Recently a photograph was published of a bird at the nest taken in Rio de Janeiro in 2009, understandably the location is a secret, and more recently RafaelFortes heard the species at the Reserva Guainumbi in São Luiz do Paraitinga at the top of ther Serra do Mar.

23/02/2011 Ubatubamirim, Ubatuba, São Paulo. White-crested Tyrannulet – alegrinho – Serpophaga subcristata. A single bird seen but sadly not photographed along the track through the marsh. Seen by Rick Simpson, Elis Simpson and Don Hill.

05/01/2011 Itaguá, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Fulvous Whistling-Duck – marreca-canaleira – Dendrocygna bicolor. Two birds found late morning on the sea by Elis Simpson with Rick Simpson and Jeremy Minns. Later, in the afternoon, three birds were present and photographed.

06/01/2011 Perequê-Açu, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Scarlet Ibis – Guará - Eudocimus ruber. Single adult breeding plumaged bird feeding along the edge of the mangroves at the estuary mouth, found and photographed by Elis and Rick Simpson.

07/01/2011 Praia Vermelha do Sul, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Brown-backed Parrotlet – apuim-de-costas-pretas – Touit melanonotus. Photographed by Carlos Rizzo but news didn’t get out until the 11th. Thankfully the birds were still present on the 14th when seen and photographed by Rick and Elis Simpson, Rafael Fortes, Marcelo Bareiros and Marco Crozariol. Present again on the 15th and 16th resting in the same group of Beach Almond – amendoa de praia – Teminalia catappa trees. These birds remained in the area intil months end.

14/01/2011 Praia Vermelha do Sul, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Osprey – águia-pescadora – Pandion haliaetus. One bird flew over the area where the parrotlets (see entry for 07/01/2011) have been seen, seen by Rick and Elis Simpson, Rafael Fortes, Marcelo Barreiros and Marco Crozariol.

05/12/2010 Itauguá beach, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Black Skimmer – talha-mar - Rhynchops niger. Immature bird on the beach, resting on the sand, feeding just off shore. Suffered a little aggression from the local Kelp Gull – gaivotão – Larus domincana population.

11/12/2010 Dura beach, Ubatuba, São Paulo. King Vulture – urubu-rei – Sarcoramphus papa. Adult bird seen perched by Jeremy Minns, local person reported the bird had been there since the day before.

12/12/2010 Paraty, Rio de Janeiro. Grey Plover – batuiruçu-de-axila-preta - Pluvialis squatarola. Non-breeding bird found and photographed by Elis Simpson on the muddy area along the sea front, with 1 White-rumped Sandpiper – maçarico-de -sobre-branco – Calidris fuscicollis, 1 Ruddy Turnstone – vira-pedras – Arenaria interpres and <12> Semipalmated Plovers – batuira-do-bando – Charadrius semipalmatus found and photographed by Rick and Elis Simpson..

13/12/2010 Itaguá, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Stygian Owl – mocho-diabo – Asio stygius. Roosting bird found and photographed by Elis Simpson. This bird stayed to month’s end.

14/12/2010 PESM, Intervales, São Paulo. Veery – sabiá-norte-americano – Catharus fuscescens. A single bird seen to interact with a Creamy-bellied Thrush – sabiá-poca – Turdus amaurochalinus; photographed 15th December by Gilberto Teixeira Rodrigues (Betinho). [This bird was originally identified as Swainson's Thrush - sabiá-de-óculos - Catharus ustulatus.]

06/11/2010 Ipiranga trail, Nucleo Santa Virginia, PESM, Sao Paulo. Atlantic Royal Flycatcher - maria-leque-do-sul - Onychorhynchus swainsoni. Single bird first seen by Lucia Goncalves de Freitas and photographed by João Marcelo da Costa of the Guainumbi Reserve.

07/11/2010 Praia dos Palmeiros, Carguatatuba, Sao Paulo. Hudsonian Godwit - maçarico-de-bico-virado - Limosa haemastica. Two birds found and photographed by Sérgio Coutinho Jr. and Marcos Eugênio; at the same time Greater Yellowlegs – maçarico-grande-de-perna-amarela - Tringa melanoleuca. At Ubatumirim Felipe Castro photographed a Tiny Hawk – gavião-miudinho – Accipiter superciliosus the first record for Ubatuba and Yellow-headed Vulture – urubu-de-cabeça-amarela – Cathartes burrovianus a scarce species along the coast.

A pair feeding with Blue Dacnises – sái azul – Dacnis cayana and Green-honeycreeper - sái verde – Chlorophanes spiza the female found by Carlos Henrique Almeida and the pair seen by Rick and Elis Simpson.

15/11/2010 Ubatuba Birdwatching Centre, Sertão-das-Cotias, Ubatuba, São Paulo. King Vulture – urubu-rei – Sarcoramphus papa. Single bird flew directly overhead the centre in a straight line south to north: Jardim Samambaia, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Crowned Slaty Flycatcher – peitica-de-chapeu-preto – Griseothyrannus aurantioatrocristatus. Good record for Ubatuba, an out of range migrant photographed by Carlos Rizzo.

18/11/2010 Fazenda Angelim, Sao Paulo. Blue Ground-Dove - pararu-azul - Claravis pretiosa. At least a male still present, found and photographed by Elis Simpson also seen by Rick Simpson, Kevin Zimmer and Ricardo Barbosa. Kevin Zimmer also recorded the voice of this species at Folha Seca earlier in the day: Itaguá, Ubatuba, São Paulo. White-necked Hawk – gavião-pomba-pequena - Leucopternis lacernulatus. An immature bird found and photographed by Valdeir Jose Santana sitting in a Guava tree two meters from the ground. This area is very urbanised, how this bird came to be there is anybody’s guess. It stayed overnight and was seen and photographed again the next morning, by the afternoon it had gone but wasn’t seen to leave: Itamambuca, Ubatuba, São Paulo. White-necked Stilt – pernilongo-de-costas-brancas – Himantopus melanurus. 5 birds photographed on the beach by Dimitri Matoszko: Sitio Ressaca, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Bicoloured Hawk – gavião bombachina-grande – Accipiter bicolor. Single bird photographed by Felipe Castro.

30/11/2010 Praia Itaguá, Ubatuba, São Paulo. American Golden Plover – batuiruçu – Pluvialis dominica. An individual in non-breeding plumage, possibly in its first winter. Found by Elis and Rick Simpson, photogrpahed by Elis Simpson and Odette Goncalves.

07/10/2010 Rio de Janeiro international airport, Rio de Janeiro. Upland Sandpiper – maçarico-do-campo – Bartramia longicauda. Seen on the grass from taxiing aircraft by Derb Carter and Kent Fiala; Perequê, Maranduba, Rio de Janeiro. Narrow-billed Woodcreeper – arapuçu-de-cerrado – Lepidocolaptes angustirostris, seen and photographed by Derb Carter and Kent Fiala.

Tawny-browed Owl – murucututu-de-barriga-amarela – Pulsatrix koeniswaldiana. Seen and photographed by Derb Carter, Kent Fiala, Rick and Elis Simpson.

10/10/2010 Praia Ubatumirim, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Semipalmated Plover – batuíra-do-bando – Charadrius semipalmatus. Seen and photographed by Rick and Elis Simpson; Praia Dura, Ubatuba, São Paulo. White-rumped Sandpiper – maçarico-de-sobre-branco – Calidris fuscicollis. 9 individuals found by Jeremy Minns, later 6 seen of which 3 were too distant to age and 3 were juveniles which were photographed by Rick and Elis Simpson. These birds were incredibly tame and wandered around between the sunbathers and other beach-goers. The following day Jeremy found 9 again, and the day after just 7.

03/07/2010 Braba beach, Caioba, Paraná. Semipalmated Plover – batuíra-de-bando – Charadrius semipalmatus. A group of 10 seen together with 2 Collared Plovers – batuíra-de-coleira – Charadrius collaris at the southern end of the beach. Returning winter migrants. Seen by Teus Luijendjik, visiting Dutch birder.

25/07/2010 Private area in Ubatuba, São Paulo. Half-collared Sparrow – tico-tico-do-campo – Arremon semitorquatus. A singing male found constitues a first record for Ubatuba. The bird was photographed. Also at the same area Stripe-breasted Starthroat – bico-reto-de-banda-branca – Heliomasetr squamosus. A female, seen well but not photographed, this is also the first record for Ubatuba. Rick Simpson,  Elis Simpson, Edelcio Muscat.
