11/01/2012 Praia Dura, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Brown-hooded Gullgaivota-maria-velhaChroicocephalus maculipennis. A single bird in non-breeding plumage found by Marina and Jeremy Minns at around 08:30. Seen and photographed at 11:05 by Rick and Elis Simpson. Flew high a was lost to sight.

16/01/2012 Ubatuba Airport, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Roseate SpoonbillcolhereiroPlatalea ajaja. Single juvenile bird with egrets apparently present since the 15th. Also single White-rumped Swallowandorinho-de-sobre-brancoTachycineta leucorrhoa. with other hirundines over the grass.

Single individual feeding on small puddles in sandy/grassy area. Nacunda NighthawkcorucãoPodager nacunda. 14 birds roosting in sandy/grassy area.

(21st December. Breeding unsuccessful, chick appeared to be caught in some branches over the nest and died).

15/12/2011 Guarulhos, São Paulo. Tiny Hawkgavião-miudinhoAccipiter superciliosus. Single bird seen from traffic jam on the Dutra Highway at the intersection with the airport service road. Flew in front of car being mobbed by a Blue-and-white Swallow - andorinho-pequeno-de-casaPygochelidon cyanoleuca and circled over roadworks. Seen by Rick and Elis Simpson and Steve Miller.

The only previous documented record fro Ubatuba is a museum specimen, although there have been sight records more recently. Seen again the following day with possibly a second bird.

21/10/2011 Ubatumirim, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Yellow-bellied SeedeaterbaianoSporophila nigricollis. A small group of female seedeaters was being accompanied by a male Yellow-bellied Seedeater. In addition there were 5 Ruddy Turnstone – vira-pedras – Arenaria interpres. There was also a small group of Whistling-Ducks comprising 3 species; 2 Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks – asa-branca – Denrocygna autumnalis, 2 White-faced Whistling-Ducks – irerê – Dendrocygna viduata and 3 Fulvous Whistling-Ducks – marreca-caneleira – Dendrocygna bicolor. All were unrecorded for the municipality on WikiAves and the latter in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Also BR101 Ubatuba, São Paulo. 20/09/2011 Ubatumirim, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Green Ibiscoró-coróMesembrinibis cayennensis. One bird seen briefly in the mangroves, sadly not photographed. Observed by Rick and Elis Simpson and UK birder Peter Mantle. At the same location a female Hook-billed Kite – caracoleiro – Chondrohierax uncinatus circling over nearby forested hill. Same observers, photographed by Elis Simpson.

21/09/2011 Ubatumirim, Ubatuba, Sao Paulo. Pied-billed Grebemergulhão-caçador - Podilymbus podiceps. An adult bird photographed at the estuary by Elis Simpson.

26/09/2011 Folha Seca, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Frilled Coquettetopetinho-vermelhoLophornis magnificus. A male present since the beginning of the month, photographed by Elis Simpson, Rafael Fortes and Luiz Carlos Ribenboim. The same day in Ubatuba, Luiz Carlos Ribenboim and Rafael Fortes photogrpahed a pair of American Pygmy KingfishermartinhoChloroceryle aenea. They have requested that the location be witheld as this bird is extememly rare in this region.

A single bird seen and photographed along the track between the gate and the clearing by Rick and Elis Simpson and David Russell; Rancho Pica-Pau, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Great Black-Hawkgavião-pretoUrubitinga urubitinga. A bird in its 2nd/3rd year, predominantly all dark but with the proximal half of the inner primaries pale and barred black, the tail pale with a broad subterminal black band, pale chest and face. Found and photographed by Rick and Elis Simpson and David Russell. This is the first time this species has been photographed in Ubatuba, the only previous record is of a voice recording by Ricardo Gagliardi at Folha Seca September 2010; Ubatumirim, Ubatuba São Paulo. 01/07/2011 Itaguá, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Stygian Owl – mocho-diaboAsio stygius. Returned to it’s roost site in Itaguá, and Praça 13 de Maio, Town Centre, Ubatuba São Paulo. Two Lesser Nighthawks – bacurau-de-asa-finaChordeiles acutipennis in the town square.

05/07/2011 Paraty, Rio de Janeiro. Rufous-chested Dotterelbatuira-de-peito-tijoloCharadrius modestus. The bird was not on the grass by the marsh but had moved to a muddy beach in front of the mangroves visible from the second petrol station on the BR101 just outside Paraty on the Ubatuba side. Also there a single Roseate SpoonbillcolhereiroPlatalea ajaja. Also seen was an unseasonal adult Barn Swallowandorinha-de-bandoHirundo rustica at the marsh, sadly this bird just flew straight through and we were unable to photograph it.

13/07/2011 Praia Prumirim, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Magellanic Penguinpingüim-de-magalhãesSpheniscus magellanicus. One immature individual washed up on the beach, taken into care. There have been a number of reports of birds washed up along the Ubatuba beaches this month.

16/07/2011 Serra Trail, Ubatuba, São Paulo. White-browed Foliage-gleanerlimp-folha-miúdoAnabacerthia amaurotis. A single bird found and photographed by Oliver Simms, seen and identified by Rick Simpson and photographed by Elis Simpson. This constitutes the first record of this species for Ubatuba. Also Speckle-breasted Antpittapinto-do-matoHylopezus nattereri. This is the first documented record of the species in Ubatuba, sound recorded by Elis Simpson

20/07/2011 Janaina, Ilha Comprida, São Paulo. White-banded Mockingbird - calhandra-de-três-rabosMimus trivius. A single bird found and photographed by Rick and Elis Simpson and Oliver Simms. This is probably only the fourth record for São Paulo state.

01/06/2011 Rua Paulo Setúbal, Itaguá, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Red-ruffed FruitcrowPavó - Pyroderus scutatus. Adult found dead having hit a window. There have been a number of these birds reported in the town area feeding on fruiting Juçara Palms.

02/06/2011 Near to USP, Ipiranga, São Paulo. Buff-necked Ibis – curicacaTheristicus caudatus. An individual found in the centre of the city in a busy area by Raquel Colombo Oliveira.

13/06/2011 Rio Grande, Rio Grande do Sul. WilletMaçarico-de-asa-brancaTringa semipalmata. Two, presumably first year birds, at a marsh on the shore of Lagoa dos Patos. Found and photographed by Rafael Dias, Rick and Elis Simpson. This could be the first documented record for the state.

26/06/2011 Folha Seca, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Black-backed Tanager – saíra-sapucaia - Tangara peruviana. A male seen and photographed at Folha Seca. This is the only record we know of where this species has been obseved away form or close to feeding stations. Observed by Rick and Elis simposn and David Bates. Photographed by Elis Simpson.

27/06/2011 Marsh, Paraty, Rio de Janeiro. Rufous-chested Dotterel – batuira-de-peito-tijoloCharadrius modestus. A single bird found and photographed on the marshy area in front of the old church, feeding in the grass at high tide. Very approachable.

02/05/2011 Airfield, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Black-bellied Whistling Duckasa-brancaDendrocygna autumnalis. A group of 8 birds together on temporary pools represent the second documented record for the species in Ubatuba, they were with 2 White-faced Whistling Duck - irerê - Dendrocygna viduata, which is also rare, the only other documented record being of a bird of doubtful origin at Cambucá. Note that access to the airfield is restricted and permission must be sought. There are also 2 Brazilian Tealpé-vermelha - Amazonetta brasiliensis on the temporary pools there.
