03/01/2012 Folha Seca, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Stripe-breasted Starthroat – bico-reto-de-banda-branca – Heliomaster squamosus. A female found and photographed at the hummingbird feeders in Folha Seca by Elis Simpson. Also seen by Rick Simpson.

11/01/2012 Praia Dura, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Brown-hooded Gull – gaivota-maria-velha – Chroicocephalus maculipennis. A single bird in non-breeding plumage found by Marina and Jeremy Minns at around 08:30. Seen and photographed at 11:05 by Rick and Elis Simpson. Flew high a was lost to sight.

14/01/2012 Praia Dura, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Brown-hooded Gull – gaivota-maria-velha – Chroicocephalus maculipennis. Seen again briefly by Marina and Jeremy Minns.

16/01/2012 Ubatuba Airport, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Roseate Spoonbill – colhereiro – Platalea ajaja. Single juvenile bird with egrets apparently present since the 15th. Also single White-rumped Swallow – andorinho-de-sobre-branco – Tachycineta leucorrhoa. with other hirundines over the grass.

17/01/2012 Ubatuba Airport, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Roseate Spoonbill – colhereiro – Platalea ajaja. Single juvenile bird still present. Pectoral Sandpiper – maçarico-colete – Calidris melanotos. Single individual feeding on small puddles in sandy/grassy area. Nacunda Nighthawk – corucão – Podager nacunda. 14 birds roosting in sandy/grassy area.

27/01/2012 Rice fields, Tremebé, São Paulo. American Wood Stork – cabeça-seca – Mycteria americana. 10 birds seen, 8 on the fields 2 in trees nearby. Peregrine Falcon – falcão-peregrino - Falco peregrinus. Single bird sitting in trees ner to rice fields. Spotted Rail – saracura – carijó - Pardirallus maculatus. A family found and photographed by Felipe and João Castro. Pair with 5 chicks.

04/12/2011 Salesópolis Lake, São Paulo. American Wood Stork – cabeça-seca – Mycteria americana. Two birds seen and photographed flying-in and alighting in a ditch by Elis and Rick Simpson and Peter. Jenny and Megan Sharland.

06/12/2011 Perequê-Açu, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Pied-billed Grebe – mergulão-caçador – Podylimbus podiceps and American Golden Plover - batuiruçu – Pluvialis dominica. Seen and photographed at low tide on estuary of Rio Indaiá by Elis and Rick Simpson and Peter. Jenny and Megan Sharland.

White-vented Violetear – beija-flor-de-orelha-violeta – Colibris serrirostris and White-browed Blackbird – policia-Inglesa-do-sul – Sturnella superciliaris, the first record for Ubatuba. 13/12/2011 Ubatumirim, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Small-billed Elaenia – guaracava-de-bico-curto – Elaenia parvirostris. A new bird for Ubatuba found to be breeding by Rick and Elis Simpson and Steve Miller. (21st December. Breeding unsuccessful, chick appeared to be caught in some branches over the nest and died).

15/12/2011 Guarulhos, São Paulo. Tiny Hawk – gavião-miudinho – Accipiter superciliosus. Single bird seen from traffic jam on the Dutra Highway at the intersection with the airport service road. Flew in front of car being mobbed by a Blue-and-white Swallow - andorinho-pequeno-de-casa – Pygochelidon cyanoleuca and circled over roadworks. Seen by Rick and Elis Simpson and Steve Miller.

19/12/2011 Ubatumirim, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Streamer-tailed Tyrant – tesoura-do-brejo - Gubernetes yetapa. Single bird found and photographed by Felipe and João Castro. Still present when independently found by Rick and Elis Simpson 21st December 2012.

27/12/2011 Perequê, Rio de Janeiro. Olive-sided Flycatcher – piui-boreal – Contopus cooperi. Single bird found and photographed by Guilherme Serpa, Ricardo Gagliardi, Eduardo Getti and Gabriel Mello. Also seen, photographed and vocalisation recorded by Rick and Elis Simpson on the 29th.

American Golden Plover - batuiruçu – Pluvialis dominica 3 still on the shorefront marsh, plus 8 Ruddy Turnstones – vira-pedras – Arenaria interpres, 7 Spotted Sandpipers – maçarico-pintado – Actitis macularius and 17 Semipalmated Plovers – batuira-de-bando – Charadrius semipalmatus. On the shoreline there was a party of 7 Black Skimmers – talha-mar – Rynchops niger all seen and photographed by Rick and Elis Simpson.

17/11/2011 Itamambuca Eco-Resort, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Dubois’ Seedeater – papa-capim-de-costas-cinzas – Sporophila ardesiaca. Photographed by Carlos Rizzo. This constitutes the first record of this species for the municipality.

27/11/2011 Rancho Pica-Pau, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Lesser Swallow-tailed Swift – Andorinhão-estofador – Panyptila catennensis. Photographed by Elis Simpson. The only previous documented record fro Ubatuba is a museum specimen, although there have been sight records more recently. Seen again the following day with possibly a second bird.

18/10/2011 Av. Castelo Branco, Mogi das Cruzes, São Paulo. Bank Swallow – andorinha-do-barranco – Riparia riparia. One bird seen hawking for insects with Blue and White Swallow – andorinha-pequena-de-casa – Pygochelidon cyanoleuca and White-rumped Swallow – andorinha-de-sobre-branco – Tachycineta leucorrhoa, photographed. 21/10/2011 Ubatumirim, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Yellow-bellied Seedeater – baiano – Sporophila nigricollis. A small group of female seedeaters was being accompanied by a male Yellow-bellied Seedeater. A single bird in the company of a Pectoral Sandpiper - maçarico-de-colete - Calidris melanotus, 3 American Golden Plovers -  batuiruçu – Pluvialis dominica, 7 Spotted Sandpipers – maçarico-pintado – Actitis macularius and 21 Semipalmated Plovers - batuira-de-bando – Charadrius semipalmatus.

30/10/2011 Saltmarsh, Paraty, Rio de Janeiro. Hudsonian Godwit - maçarico-de-bico-virado – Limosa haemastica still present as wee the 3 American Golden Plovers -  batuiruçu – Pluvialis dominica, 7 Spotted Sandpipers – maçarico-pintado – Actitis macularius and 15 Semipalmated Plovers - batuira-de-bando – Charadrius semipalmatus. In addition there were 5 Ruddy Turnstone – vira-pedras – Arenaria interpres. There was also a small group of Whistling-Ducks comprising 3 species; 2 Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks – asa-branca – Denrocygna autumnalis, 2 White-faced Whistling-Ducks – irerê – Dendrocygna viduata and 3 Fulvous Whistling-Ducks – marreca-caneleira – Dendrocygna bicolor. All were unrecorded for the municipality on WikiAves and the latter in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Also BR101 Ubatuba, São Paulo. Mantled Hawk – gavião-pombo-grande – Leucopternis polionotus all the above seen and photographed by Rick and Elis Simpson and Frank van der Kallen.

20/09/2011 Ubatumirim, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Green Ibis – coró-coró – Mesembrinibis cayennensis. One bird seen briefly in the mangroves, sadly not photographed. Observed by Rick and Elis Simpson and UK birder Peter Mantle. At the same location a female Hook-billed Kite – caracoleiro – Chondrohierax uncinatus circling over nearby forested hill. Same observers, photographed by Elis Simpson.

21/09/2011 Ubatumirim, Ubatuba, Sao Paulo. Pied-billed Grebe – mergulhão-caçador - Podilymbus podiceps. An adult bird photographed at the estuary by Elis Simpson.

26/09/2011 Folha Seca, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Frilled Coquette – topetinho-vermelho – Lophornis magnificus. A male present since the beginning of the month, photographed by Elis Simpson, Rafael Fortes and Luiz Carlos Ribenboim. The same day in Ubatuba, Luiz Carlos Ribenboim and Rafael Fortes photogrpahed a pair of American Pygmy Kingfisher – martinho – Chloroceryle aenea. They have requested that the location be witheld as this bird is extememly rare in this region.

01/08/2011 Perequê, Mambucaba, Rio de Janeiro. White-necked Hawk – gavião-pombo-pequeno – Amadonastur lacenulatus. One bird seen at the edge of the dirt road after the first bridge. Found and photographed by Elis Simpson, also seen and photographed by Carlos Henrique Almeida, Rick Simpson and Oz Horine; Ubaubmirim, Ubatuba, São Paulo a single Muscovy Duck – pato-do-mato – Cairina moschata, was seen flying over the marsh area at dusk by the same observers but was not photographed.

A single individual mixing with White-rumped Swallows – andorinho-de-sobre-branco – Tachycineta leucorrhoa and Blue-and-white Swallows – andorinho-pequena-de-casa – Pygochelidon cyanoleuca; Reservoir marsh, Salesópolis, São Paulo. 7 White-backed Stilts - pernilongo-de-costas-brancas – Himantopus melanurus, 2 Pectoral Sandpipers – maçarico-de-colete – Calidris melanotos, 3 Lesser Yellowlegs – maçarico-de-perna-amarela – Tringa flavipes and 2 Silver Teal – marreca-cricri – Anas versicolor.

06/08/2011 Fazenda Angelim, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Bay-ringed Tyrannulet – maria-pequena - Phylloscartes sylviolus. A single bird seen and photographed along the track between the gate and the clearing by Rick and Elis Simpson and David Russell; Rancho Pica-Pau, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Great Black-Hawk – gavião-preto – Urubitinga urubitinga. A bird in its 2nd/3rd year, predominantly all dark but with the proximal half of the inner primaries pale and barred black, the tail pale with a broad subterminal black band, pale chest and face. Found and photographed by Rick and Elis Simpson and David Russell. This is the first time this species has been photographed in Ubatuba, the only previous record is of a voice recording by Ricardo Gagliardi at Folha Seca September 2010; Ubatumirim, Ubatuba São Paulo. Aplomado Falcon – falcão-de-coleira – Falco femoralis. Single bird seen and photographed by Elis and Rick Simpson and David Russell. Also Uniform Crake – saracura-lisa – Amaurolimnus concolor., at least three birds heard calling from reeds in the marsh area by the same observers.

01/07/2011 Itaguá, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Stygian Owl – mocho-diabo – Asio stygius. Returned to it’s roost site in Itaguá, and Praça 13 de Maio, Town Centre, Ubatuba São Paulo. Two Lesser Nighthawks – bacurau-de-asa-fina – Chordeiles acutipennis in the town square.

05/07/2011 Paraty, Rio de Janeiro. Rufous-chested Dotterel – batuira-de-peito-tijolo – Charadrius modestus. The bird was not on the grass by the marsh but had moved to a muddy beach in front of the mangroves visible from the second petrol station on the BR101 just outside Paraty on the Ubatuba side. Also there a single Roseate Spoonbill – colhereiro – Platalea ajaja. Also seen was an unseasonal adult Barn Swallow – andorinha-de-bando – Hirundo rustica at the marsh, sadly this bird just flew straight through and we were unable to photograph it.

11/07/2011 Praia Vermelho do Norte, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Fulvous Whistling-Duck – marreca-caneleira – Dendrocygna bicolor. Found and photographed by Rick and Elis Simpson and Oliver Simms. Second record for Ubatuba.

13/07/2011 Praia Prumirim, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Magellanic Penguin – pingüim-de-magalhães – Spheniscus magellanicus. One immature individual washed up on the beach, taken into care. There have been a number of reports of birds washed up along the Ubatuba beaches this month.

16/07/2011 Serra Trail, Ubatuba, São Paulo. White-browed Foliage-gleaner – limp-folha-miúdo – Anabacerthia amaurotis. A single bird found and photographed by Oliver Simms, seen and identified by Rick Simpson and photographed by Elis Simpson. This constitutes the first record of this species for Ubatuba. Also Speckle-breasted Antpitta – pinto-do-mato – Hylopezus nattereri. This is the first documented record of the species in Ubatuba, sound recorded by Elis Simpson

20/07/2011 Janaina, Ilha Comprida, São Paulo. White-banded Mockingbird - calhandra-de-três-rabos – Mimus trivius. A single bird found and photographed by Rick and Elis Simpson and Oliver Simms. This is probably only the fourth record for São Paulo state.

31/07/2011 Itaguá, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Stygian Owl – mocho-diabo – Asio stygius. Resident bird was seen at its usaual day roost on and off throughout the month.

01/06/2011 Rua Paulo Setúbal, Itaguá, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Red-ruffed Fruitcrow – Pavó - Pyroderus scutatus. Adult found dead having hit a window. There have been a number of these birds reported in the town area feeding on fruiting Juçara Palms.

02/06/2011 Near to USP, Ipiranga, São Paulo. Buff-necked Ibis – curicaca – Theristicus caudatus. An individual found in the centre of the city in a busy area by Raquel Colombo Oliveira.

13/06/2011 Rio Grande, Rio Grande do Sul. Willet – Maçarico-de-asa-branca – Tringa semipalmata. Two, presumably first year birds, at a marsh on the shore of Lagoa dos Patos. Found and photographed by Rafael Dias, Rick and Elis Simpson. This could be the first documented record for the state.

26/06/2011 Folha Seca, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Black-backed Tanager – saíra-sapucaia - Tangara peruviana. A male seen and photographed at Folha Seca. This is the only record we know of where this species has been obseved away form or close to feeding stations. Observed by Rick and Elis simposn and David Bates. Photographed by Elis Simpson.

27/06/2011 Marsh, Paraty, Rio de Janeiro. Rufous-chested Dotterel – batuira-de-peito-tijolo – Charadrius modestus. A single bird found and photographed on the marshy area in front of the old church, feeding in the grass at high tide. Very approachable.

02/05/2011 Airfield, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Black-bellied Whistling Duck – asa-branca – Dendrocygna autumnalis. A group of 8 birds together on temporary pools represent the second documented record for the species in Ubatuba, they were with 2 White-faced Whistling Duck - irerê - Dendrocygna viduata, which is also rare, the only other documented record being of a bird of doubtful origin at Cambucá. Note that access to the airfield is restricted and permission must be sought. There are also 2 Brazilian Teal – pé-vermelha - Amazonetta brasiliensis on the temporary pools there.

BR101 Itaguá, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Both Savanna Hawk – gavião-caboclo – Heterospizias meridionalis and Snail Kite - gavião-caramujeiro – Rostrhamus sociabilis. were seen, the former photographed by Elis Simpson, the latter the female present since April. Fishing Port, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Wing-banded Hornero – casca-de-couro-de-lama – Furnarius figulus photographed by Elis Simpson, this species is a recent arrival in Ubatuba.

28/04/2011 BR101 Itaguá, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Snail Kite - gavião-carmugeiro – Rostrhamus sociabilis. Single female, probably a returning individual first seen in 2008. According to a local resident the bird has been present for more than a week, but exact details not clear. Found and photographed by Elis Simpson.
