In what is probably the most northern record of the species in Brazil, Ubatuba has gained another species for its list.
On 16th of April Rick and Elis Simpson found and photographed a female Austral Negrito, which sadly is in a restricted area with no public access.

On the 10th of April Elis and I were with a client looking for shorebirds along the beach at Ubatumirim when we came across this Nacunda Nighthawk roosting on the sand. It was sitting amongst the tideline flotsam and jetsom. It was remarkably well camouflaged and incredibly tolerant of passing beach goers, cars and dune buggies, presumably having much confidence in its disguise. Indeed of all the passers by, we were the only ones who noticed it and when anyone else came by we turned away so as not to draw attention to it. It did get disturbed once, but only flew a few metres and then settled down again..

14/04/2011 Sítio do Cervo, Miracutu, São Paulo. Grey-bellied Goshawk – tauató-pintado – Accipiter poliogaster. A sound recording of possibly two birds’ voices recorded by Tim Hirsch.
16/04/2011 Undisclosed location, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Austral Negrito – colegial – Lessonia rufa. Single female bird in a private area with no public access. For more information contact rick@ubwc.info.
28/04/2011 BR101 Itaguá, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Snail Kite - gavião-carmugeiro – Rostrhamus sociabilis. Single female, probably a returning individual first seen in 2008. According to a local resident the bird has been present for more than a week, but exact details not clear. Found and photographed by Elis Simpson.
