Stygian Owl in Ubatuba.

On the 13th of December Elis Simpson found a roosting Stygian Owl in Itaguá, Ubatuba and got photographs to record the event. This bird was later seen by Rick Simpson and two visitors from the UK, Janet Waters and Byron Morgan. The news was posted on the website on the bird news from the region page and e-mails sent to local people who may have an interest in seeing the bird.

(There has been one documented record in Ubatuba before, last year when one was photographed but the news was not shared.)

On the same day a single White-rumped Sandpiper was found and photographed by Elis Simpson on the beach at Itaguá, Ubatuba.

Another Black Skimmer.

Rick and Elis Simpson found an immature Black Skimmer along the shoreline on Itaguá beach. It was loafing on the beach near to a group of Kelp Gulls who displayed aggression towards it whenever it approached them, either on foot or in flight.

05/12/2010 Itauguá beach, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Black Skimmer – talha-mar - Rhynchops niger. Immature bird on the beach, resting on the sand, feeding just off shore. Suffered a little aggression from the local Kelp Gull – gaivotãoLarus domincana population.

11/12/2010 Dura beach, Ubatuba, São Paulo. King Vulture – urubu-reiSarcoramphus papa. Adult bird seen perched by Jeremy Minns, local person reported the bird had been there since the day before.

12/12/2010 Paraty, Rio de Janeiro. Grey Ploverbatuiruçu-de-axila-preta - Pluvialis squatarola. Non-breeding bird found and photographed by Elis Simpson on the muddy area along the sea front, with 1 White-rumped Sandpipermaçarico-de -sobre-brancoCalidris fuscicollis, 1 Ruddy Turnstonevira-pedrasArenaria interpres and <12> Semipalmated Plovers – batuira-do-bandoCharadrius semipalmatus found and photographed by Rick and Elis Simpson..

13/12/2010 Itaguá, Ubatuba, São Paulo. Stygian Owl – mocho-diaboAsio stygius. Roosting bird found and photographed by Elis Simpson. This bird stayed to month’s end.

14/12/2010 PESM, Intervales, São Paulo. Veery – sabiá-norte-americanoCatharus fuscescens. A single bird seen to interact with a Creamy-bellied Thrush – sabiá-pocaTurdus amaurochalinus; photographed 15th December by Gilberto Teixeira Rodrigues (Betinho). [This bird was originally identified as Swainson's Thrush - sabiá-de-óculos - Catharus ustulatus.]

American Golden Plover on Itaguá beach.

On the beach at Itaguá, Elis and Rick Simpson found this American Golden Plover whilst watching Brown Boobies feeding out in the bay. It is in non-breeding plumage and possibly is in its first winter.
