Following a phone call to a friend here in Ubatuba I discovered that there has been a couple of caprimulgids seen roosting in the town square, that had been identified as Short-tailed Nighthawks. I wasted no time in rushing down to town, and stopped at the town square. I had been told that the taxi drivers would be able to show me which tree to look in, and so they did.
However, when I got my bins on the birds they turned out to be Lesser Nighthawks and not Short-tailed, they had been misidentified.
I got my scope onto the birds, showed the taxi drivers the birds and explained to them why the name they had been given was wrong, they could all see the ID features as I explained them. The taxi drivers revelled in their new occupation of pointing the birds out to passer-by whilst waiting for their next fare!
