Recent birds at the centre.

26/2/2010. Black-throated Grosbeak singing near the observation area.

23/2/2010. Lemon-chested Greenlet, Long-billed Gnatwren, Tufted Antshrike, Yellow-fronted Woodpecker, Orange-eyed Thornbird and Neotropical River Warbler all heard calling at the observation area. There was a single female Black-throated Mango and still some Black Jacobins at the feeders.

22/2/2010. There were all the usual suspects at the feeders today, except there were no Black-throated Mangos. There also appeared to be a reduction in the Black Jacobin numbers. They, along with the mangos, will be leaving soon, they are only summer visitors here in Ubatuba.

The other interesting birds today included Grey Elaenia and a first for the centre Common Waxbill, which, although it is an introduced species, is nonetheless fun to see.

Southern Lapwing; Roadside Hawk; Laughing Falcon; Ruddy ground-Dove; Channel-billed Toucan; Spot-billed Toucanet; Blond-crested Woodpecker; Saw-billed Hermit; Glittering-throated and Versicoloured Emerald; Black Jacobin; Black-throated Mango; Sombre and Swallow-tailed Hummingbird; Festive Coquette; Violet-capped Woodnymph; Rufous-winged Antwren; Ferruginous Antbird: White-shouldered Fire-eye; Yellow Tyrannulet; Yellow-browed Tyrant; White-winged Becard; Lemon-chested Greenlet; Blue and White Swallow; Long-billed Wren; Buff-throated Purpletuft; Long-billed Gnatwren; Green-headed, Sayaca, Brazilian, Ruby-crowned and Golden-chevroned Tanager; Rufous-collared Sparrow; Double-collared Seedeater and Neotropical River Warbler.

UBWC ornithological workshops.

Filed under: UBWC NEWS AND PROJECT UPDATES — rick @ 21:10

UBWC is commencing what will hopefully be a series of workshops on matters ornithological. The first is planned for April 2010 and will be on the subject of identification for beginners. Lectures will be by Rick Simpson and Jeremy Minns. It will be a weekend affair with a welcoming bar-b-q on the Friday evening, accommodation and most meals provided in the package.

Lectures will be on classification of birds, bird topography, the process of identification and identifying birds by ear. All lectures will be in Portuguese. For further details please contact Rick through rick@ubwc.info

During a recent visit by Jeremy to the UBWC to discuss the workshop, Elis (who was helping Odette to identify some of the birds she had photographed in Amazonas) heard a Buff-throated Purpletuft singing nearby. We all rushed out and found the male in a low Guava tree right beside the centre giving Jeremy the best views he had ever had.
